A Pioneer Resident Answers Final Call
F. J. Morgan, Civil War Veteran and Resident Here Since 1872, Dies Sunday - Funeral Friday.
Flavius J. Morgan, a veteran of the Civil War and a resident of this community since 1872, died at his home following a long illness. Funeral services for the deceased will be held from the Methodist church on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock and internment will be made in the Wood River cemetery.
Mr. Morgan has been in feeble health for a number of years and some two or three months since suffered a paraletic stroke from which he never fully recovered. He was one of the earliest settlers in this community and has a host of friends who will mourn his passing.
Flavius J. Morgan was born in Rochester, Vermont, August 20 1844. He enlisted July 18, 1863, in the New York Cavalry (Griswold Light). For three years, or during the war. He was discharged August 31, 1866 and returned home to Vermont.
On January 7, 1867, he again enlisted and was assigned to the 23rd U. S. Infantry and served for three years and was discharged January 7, 1870, at Fort Boise, Idaho. He went to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and enlisted for five years and served in company B, 4th United States infantry and served two years and five months and was discharged for disability, with a pension, at Crab Orchard, Kentucky, on August 14, 1872, and then came direct to Wood River, Nebraska.
On December 10, 1874 he was united in marriage to Miss Hattie L. E. Hanscomb. To this union five children were born, three boys and two girls. One of the boys dying in infancy. His wife departed this life six years ago.
At 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 19th, Mr. Morgan fell asleep. HE leaves to mourn his departure his four children: Mrs. Edward Dreblow of Wood River; Charles C. Morgan of Sunnyside Washington; bliss F. Morgan of Wood River; Mrs. Moses Zehr of Albany, Oregon. Also ten grandchildren and one great grand child.
