James R. Moore, retired Sgt. 1st Class, 93, a resident of The Village of Laurel Run, and formerly of 14561 Pennersville Road, Cascade, died Sunday, March 16, 2008, at the nursing home.
Born Dec. 29, 1914, in Linden, N.C., he was the son of the late Cleveland and Anna Smith Moore.
His wife, Mildred I. Lyddane Moore, died Nov. 1, 1982. They were married in February 1943.
He received his GED while serving in the military and also attended two years of college.
He worked in Washington, D.C., at the Kennedy Center, retiring in 1975.
He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps for 30 years, serving during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. The last 10 years of his military career were served at Fort Ritchie with the Joint Communications Agency at Site R. He retired in January 1966.
He was a member of Germantown Church of God in Cascade.
He is survived by one stepson, Kenneth E. Saylor of College Park, Md.; two sisters, Alice Haney and Mae Lucas, both of Dunn, N.C.; two stepgrandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his companion, Frances E. "Skip" Bovey of Waynesboro, Pa.
He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters, and one stepgrandson.
Services will be Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Pastor Mark A. Hosler will officiate. Burial will be in Fort Lincoln Cemetery, Brentwood, Md.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
