Joshua Newton Barney, age 88, of Berkeley Springs, W.Va., died on Thursday, November 12, 2009 at his home.

Born October 17, 1921 in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late Joshua Commodore and Emma Henry Barney.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He attended Bath District High School and worked as a maintenance engineer with Concord College in Athens, W.Va. He had been a groundskeeper of Greenway Cemetery and for 20 years, had been a school bus driver with Morgan County Public Schools.

For more than 50 years, he had been a member of Berkeley Springs Volunteer Fire Company, where he had served as a past Chief; he was also a member of the West Virginia State American Legion, the Junior Order of United American Mechanics Council #117 and had been a coach with Morgan County Little League. He served one term as a Morgan County Commissioner during the 1960s.

He enjoyed bowling, baseball and had been a pitcher for the Berkeley Springs Baseball team.

He is survived by two daughters, Gloria Jean "Poozie" Kelly and Paula "Polly" Barney, both of Berkeley Springs; two granddaughters, Carol Ann Kelly Strawderman, Port Allegany, Pa. and Carrie Ann Barney, Berkeley Springs; five grandsons, Timothy Lee Kelly, Ritchie Lee Barney and Patrick Kevin Barney, all of Berkeley Springs, James Lynn Kelly, Smyrna, Ga. and Rodney Lane Barney, Mount Juliet, Tenn.; 12 great grandchildren, Kayleen DiMinno, Kyleen Kelly, Jayden Wills, Kathleen Kelly and Camden Barney, all of Berkeley Springs, Kristeen Kelly, Martinsburg, Kieran Kelly, Morgan Kelly, Smyrna, Ga., Richard Barney, Frederick, Md., Hunter Strawderman and Trenton Strawderman, both of Port Allegany, Pa. and Logan Barney, Mount Juliet, Tenn.; one great great granddaughter, Olivia DiMinno, Berkeley Springs and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Braithwaite Barney on September 16, 2009; one son, Roger Lee Barney; five sisters, Mary Stotler, Martha VanGosen, Marguerite Michael, Eleanor Barney and Amy Crouse and four brothers, Roscoe, Stanley, Estee and Wilson Barney.

Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 16, 2009 at the Helsley-Johnson Funeral Home, 95 Union Street, Berkeley Springs, W.Va., with Pastor Rodney Truax officiating. Interment with military graveside honors provided by the Tri-State Honor Guard was in Greenway Cemetery.
