James Martinus Bates Sr. passed away on Feb. 8, 2008 at the age of 90 in the home of his daughter after a brief illness. James was born on Feb. 24, 1917 in Washington D.C. to James Andrew Bates and Fannie H. Javins Cole. When he was 4, his family moved to Whitsitt, Pa.
James received his early education in Washington and Pennsylvania and attended high school in Saginaw, Mich. In his late teens, he moved back to the D.C. area. James married Annoise Lorraine Bates of Quantico, Va., on July 31, 1940 in Manassas, Va.
In 1942, the family moved back to Saginaw where he went to work for General Motors. James worked at the Central Foundry Division; he retired in 1973 after 31 years of employment. He loved to travel, visiting his siblings in Pennsylvania and other relatives in Virginia and Washington D.C.
James was a farmer at heart and for more than 40 years planted vegetable gardens both on a rented lot and in his own backyard, growing everything from corn to strawberries. He gave up his backyard garden when his health started to fail and the family still misses those fresh collard greens and tomatoes. James was well-known for his backyard cookouts and fabulous homemade sauce. Although his children have tried for years to duplicate it, so far no one has been succeeded. James' homemade Christmas eggnog brought many friends from as far as Bay City to the family home during the holiday season.
James was a devoted husband and loved his wife of 67 years, his "Sweet Lorraine." He was a loving and supportive father to his 11 children, their children and their children's children. James also was a caring brother, brother-in-law, uncle and loyal friend.
James is survived by his wife, Lorraine; two sons, Jeffrey L. Bates of Saginaw and John E.
