Specialist Four Carl Sinatra Mercer was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army Selective Service and a Draftee, SP4 Mercer served our country until December 28th, 1966 in Binh Hoa, South Vietnam. He was 22 years old and was married. It was reported that Carl died from multiple fragmentation wounds from a mine. His body was recovered. Carl was born on April 8th, 1944 in Belcross, North Carolina. SP4 Mercer is on panel 13E, line 092 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.
JANUARY 6TH, 1967: CARL S MERCER OF CAMDEN COUNTY IS VICTIM OF WAR. Sp4 Carl Sinatra Mercer, 22, was killed in action, Wednesday, December 19th in Vietnam. The body was sent to Roberson-Hunter Funeral Home. A native of Camden County, he was the son of Linwood and Judith Mercer of Belcross and the husband of Mrs Delores Rowe Mercer. He graduated from Marian Anderson High School in 1964 and entered the armed services in November 1965. He had served in Vietnam since June of last year. Besides his widow and parents, he is survived by one daughter, Violet Ann Mercer of Trenton, NJ, two brothers; Ponce DeLeon Mercer of Belcross and Franklin M Mercer, USAF stationed in Africa; two sisters, Miss Rosetta Mercer, Durham, and Mrs Phyllis Mercer, Belcross and his paternal grandmother, Mrs Rudy Mercer of Belcross. A funeral service will be conducted at New Sawyer Creek Baptist Church in Camden, Sunday, with R.R. Burnell officiating. Burial with full Military Rites will be in New Oak Grove Cemetery in Elizabeth City. The family will be at the home of the parents, Mr and Mrs Linwood Mercer, Belcross.
He served with Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division(AMBL), USARV.
He was awarded The Combat Infantryman's Badge(CIB), The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
