"In 1861 Jotham A. French and Daniel W. Sawyer started a photography business in the old Richards Block. After a fire destroyed the gallery in 1865, they moved to the new Bridgman Block (1866), and in 1871 French bought out his partner, becoming, sole owner. By 1874 he was advertising for sale 2,000 stereoscopic views. In 1890 he published a souvenir booklet on Keene containing 60 scenes. His business was last listed in the 1897-98 Keene city directory. In this same decade the principal photographers of Keene were Chester Allen, Samuel C. Dustin, and Jotham A. French."
