Daniel Webster Forbes, a Civil War Veteran, was born at Preble, Cortland County, N.Y., on March 3, 1830. He passed away on May 26, 1894 at his daughter's home, Mrs. E. H. Simons. He had been a machinist and blacksmith.

He moved with his parents to Chicago, IL., in the fall of 1832, and in 1839 they moved to Jackson County, Iowa.

He married Susan A. Usher, March 1851. They moved in a wagon to Council Bluffs, Iowa, where they lived 3 years. They were in Council Bluffs when the first house was built in Omaha.

From there, in 1855, they went with their three young children in the company of several other families down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico where they boarded a schooner bound for Nicaragua, landing at Greytown, with the intention of proceeding to the Isthmus of Panama to settle a US colony with William Walker, a US filibuster and mercenary. During the crossing of the Gulf of Mexico, their fourth child was born, a daughter, who was named after the schooner, the Minnie Schiffer.

However, because of ongoing civil conflict in Nicaragua and "Walker's War," they were unable to get into the interior and in a few months returned to Iowa, settling in DeWitt, where they remained for 25 years.

During the Civil War, Daniel enlisted in Co. B, 1st Iowa Cavalry and served 3 years. In April 1885, they moved to Ida Grove, Iowa.

Susan A. Forbes was born at Rockport, Ohio, July 7, 1832, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Howard, May 1, 1903. Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church with Dr. Leonard H. Woodworth, pastor officiating. Burial was in the Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida County, Iowa.

Susan was united in marriage to D. W. Forbes at Fulton, Jackson County, Iowa, March 6, 1857. To them were born 10 children, 6 of whom are living, Mrs. John J. Haskins, Mrs. Everett H. Simons, Mrs. Fred Howard of Omaha, NE.; Charles G. Forbes of DeWitt, Iowa; Elmer E. Forbes of Washington, D.C.; and Frederick W. Forbes of Chicago, IL.; a.k.a. Charles, Janette, Minnie, Elmer, Susie, and Fred. The deceased children are Mary Aurelia, Herbert Lincoln, John, and Eleanor.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist Church, Ida Grove, with Dr. L. H. Woodworth, pastor, officiating.
