William Elser was born in Harrisburg, Pa. on Jan. 9, 1838, and passed away Dec. 8, 1911. He was a Civil War Veteran. Burial was in the Ida Grove Cemetery, Ida County, Iowa.
He enlisted in the 127 Pennsylvania Infantry in the Civil War.
In 1878, Mr. and Mrs. Elser moved with their family to Avilla, Indiana, and in the fall of 1880 came to Ida Grove.
He came with his family in a covered wagon with two boxes of carpenter tools and personal belongings. He entered into construction business with his two sons, Edward, and Harry.
He was a contractor and a builder in business under the firm name of Elser & Sons for 31 years before his death. Many of the Elser structures still stand as landmarks in the Ida Grove Community, such as, the Community Hall, Pilcher Building, Sportsman, Silver Creek Church, and many of the older, finer homes in Ida Grove.
William married in 1865 to Caroline Madder, and they had 6 children, Edward Elser, Mrs. F. L. Hadlock, Harry Elser, and Mrs. Milt Rupert, with 2 dying in infancy.
His grandson, Frank Elser, continued the business, specializing in cabinet making until his retirement.
Frank Elser married Mae Weisensee and two daughters were born to them, Ava Lou Stewart of Rockford, Illinois, and Mona Jeffries of Ida Grove.
