My Maternal Grandfather
Grandpa Thomas passed away,when I was six years old. I don't have many memories of him. I do remember that he was quite humorous, and fun-loving with the grandchildren. One evening, my brother Bob was playing baseball with his neighborhood friends. Grandpa decided to join them. He hit the ball and started running towards first base. His team players hollered "GO home, go home!" Grandpa hollered back, "I just came from there!" I always liked this story as well, told by my mother. One day she came home from school, with a question from the teacher. Mom was to find out, where her ancestors came from, her nationality. Grandpa's response was, "You tell your teacher that you are a "Blue-bellied Yank! That you got your father's features, and your mother's fixtures."

My Grandparents Wedding Announcement was printed in The Holland Independent, February 22, 1923 as follows:
Weinkauf- Thomas Nuptials
"The wedding of Miss Elsie Weinkauf and Mr.Wm Thomas took place last Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. in the St. James Lutheran church. The Rev. Bonoff, of Pipestone performing the marriage ceremony.
Both young people are well known here and are held in high esteem by the entire community.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Weinkauf of Holland, and has always lived here. Until recently, she was employed by the Peoples Co-operative store, where her efficiency and congeniality made her many friends.
The groom is the eldest son of Mrs. Mary Thomas of Ireton, Iowa, in which vicinity he enjoys a most commendable reputation.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas will start housekeeping March 1st.on the Weinkauf farm north of Holland. The community wishes them a full measure of wedding happiness."
William was a farmer. He like to hunt, fish, and liked to dance. Especially, the Polka. He met his second wife, Alice at a dance.

Former Ireton Resident Dies
William Thomas, 60, a former Ireton resident, died Nov. 27 at Tyler, Minn.
Mr. Thomas was born July 31, 1900, at Ireton to Henry and Mary Thomas. In 1908 he moved to Wisconsin and later moved back to Ireton. In 1921 he moved to Murray county, Minn.
On Feb. 15,1923 he married Elsie Weinkauf, who died in 1955. After his marriage he moved to a farm in Pipestone county, Minn.
On Feb, 20,1959 he married Alice Wendland at Balaton, Minn.
He was a member of St. James Lutheran church at Holland, Minn.
Mr. Thomas is survived by his wife, Alice; two daughters, Erlene (Mrs. Harm Heidebrink) of Sedan, Minn., and Florence (Mrs. Robert TenCate) of Edgerton, Minn.; two sons, Lorence of Elkton, S. D., and William, jr., of Holland, Minn.; three step-daughters, Mavis (Mrs. Willard Carlson) of Balaton, Arlys and Ellen Wendland of Holland, Minn.; five sisters, Mrs. Wm. Amundson of Nekoosa, Wis., Mrs. Charles Amundson of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Mrs. Melvin Terril of Orange City, Mrs. Eldo Baack of Ireton and Mrs. Orville Paulsifer of Omaha; one brother, Cecil Thomas of Wisconsin Rapids; 15 grandchildren and 2 step grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Nov. 30 in St. James Lutheran church at Holland, Minn. Burial was in the Holland cemetery. Rev. A. J. Stoskopf officiated. Mrs. Herman Conrad was organist and music was by the church choir. Casket bearers were Donald Paulsifer. Edwin Thomas, George Goslinga, James Thomas, Emory Baack and Orville Baack.
Those attending the funeral from Ireton were Mr. and Mrs. Eldo Baack, Oina Baack, Mrs. Virgil Tammen and Mrs. R. Baker of Merrill.
