Preston served as a Private First Class in the 115th Infantry Regiment, 29th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II.

He resided in Cecil County, Maryland and was a member of the Maryland National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on February 3, 1941, prior to the war, from Elkton, Maryland. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Farm Hand and also as Single, with dependents.

Preston was "Killed In Action" in France during the war.

He was awarded the Purple Heart.

Service # 20341772

S/Sgt. Charles T. Creighton, also of Cecil County, was member of the same National Guard unit and was also "Killed In Action" in France.
