Florence R. (Long) Brown, 89, passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2009 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.
She was born in Mill Hall, the youngest of five children of John and Bertha Price Long.
Her father had emigrated from Germany and her mother was a descendant of the Price and Schroeder families who were early settlers of Sugar Valley. She was the wife of L. Frank Brown who preceded her in death.
Florence, a self-taught landscape artist, was always interested in art and began sketching and painting at an early age. Through the years people have admired her paintings. In 1974 she was persuaded to have a showing at the Ross library. Her work was very well received; she sold some but preferred to gift them to family and a few friends. She also enjoyed a multitude of various crafts.
Another of her hobbies was making dollhouse furniture. She had received a dollhouse for Christmas. It was in the rough but she painted and decorated it and began making furniture, filling it with many unique items.
After her husband died in 1977, Florence continued to live in their home until 2004 when she moved to Maryland to live with her daughter and son-in-law.
In addition to her daughter, she is survived by two grandchildren, Brenda K. Yarrison and Brian T. Yarrison and his wife Becky. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive her.
Florence was a Christian and a member of Fellowship Chapel, an independent Bible church in Jarrettsville.
The funeral service will be held 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2009 at the Helt Funeral Chapel, 232 Hogan Blvd., with Rev. P. Frank Hartzel, Jr. officiating. Private interment will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
