James Holiday Kelley was the only child born to James "Jim" Asbury & Teressa (Spivey) Kelley. He was born in Dayton, TN.

His mother died in 1893, when he was 19 and his father re-married shortly after to Mary Ellen "Molly" Painter. When his father re-married, he changed the spelling of his last name from Kelley to Kelly, therefore James' half-brothers all have the Kelly spelling while his remained Kelley.

On June 5, 1894, James Holiday Kelley married Isabella "Belle" Valois Rucker in Rhea, Tennessee (Source: Tennessee State Marriages, 1780-2002.
He and Belle had 11 children.
