Delores ("Mitzi") Oliver Gwaltney, born February 22, 1935, in Portsmouth, Virginia, was the daughter of Robert H. and Effie Pauline Owen Oliver. She passed from this life at home in Johnson City on Sunday, August 18, 2013, at the age of 78.
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Portsmouth, Virginia, and Milligan College. She married William Gwaltney in 1955 and they have three children. She taught in the elementary grades in Carter County Schools for 20 years.
She was a dedicated Christian who was active, along with her husband, in various ministries in churches and as a faculty wife at Milligan College. She was a member of the Monday Club and led, along with her husband, the Hands of Faith Cancer Ministry at First Christian Church, Johnson City, where they are members of the Mr. and Mrs. Sunday school class.
Survivors include her husband of fifty-eight years, Dr. William Gwaltney; two daughters, Virginia Guindon (and husband, Ed) of Birmingham, Alabama, and Julie Kelly (and husband, Jeff) and son, Hugh (and wife, Angie) of Johnson City. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Jessica and Rebecca Guindon, of Birmingham, Devin Johnson (and wife, Anna), Holley Stone, Will and Olivia Kelly and Cody Bryan, of Johnson City; and one great-grandchild, Bryn Johnson, of Johnson City.
Besides nieces and nephews, she is also survived by two sisters, Ruth Ormond and Evelyn (and husband Ron) Lewis of Portsmouth, Virginia; and one brother, Ronald Oliver ,of Chesapeake, Virginia. Also two half-brothers, Robert Oliver, of Richmond, Derwood (and wife, Virginia) Oliver, of Gastonia, North Carolina; and one half-sister, Agnes McNeill, of Chesapeake, Virginia.
A private burial will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City followed by a memorial service at First Christian Church of Johnson City. The family will greet friends from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Sunday, August 25, 2013, with the service at 4:00.
Honorary pallbearers are the members of the Mr. and Mrs. Class and of the Hands of Faith Cancer Ministry of First Christian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Milligan College Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 750, Milligan College, TN 37682.
The family wishes to commend and thank Dr. Krishnan, Kim Pratt, the fellows and the staff of the Regional Cancer Center for their dedicated care during the years of her struggle. We also express deep gratitude to the staff of the oncology floor (4500) of the Johnson City Medical Center for attending to her needs during her hospitalization. The care given her by Amedisys hospice staff made her last five weeks a time of peace for her and for us at home. Thank you, one and all.
