On August 14, 1987, a fund was created by Lt. Kim Adamson of the West Valley City, Utah, police department to memorialize Sheryl's contribution to law enforcement Explorers and to honor her goal to serve as a law enforcement professional.

Sheryl died Saturday of a gun-shot wound. She was a junior at Bettendorf High School.
She was in her second year of the Bettendorf Police Explorers program. She had attained the rank of lieutenant.
Survivors in addition to her parents include sisters, Sandy and Julie Horak, both at home; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph White, Bettendorf; Mrs. Jeanne Sanchez, Davenport; and Alfred Horak, Okeechobee, Fla.
