In 1985, 15-year-old Sheryl Ann Horak joined Bettendorf Police Department Explorer Post No. 9611 in Iowa. She participated in a wide range of post activities over the next two years, rising to the rank of lieutenant. On April 25, 1987, while participating in a post activity, Sheryl was shot and killed by a individual while sitting in a squad car at the Bettendorf Police Dept.

On August 14, 1987, a fund was created by Lt. Kim Adamson of the West Valley City, Utah, police department to memorialize Sheryl's contribution to law enforcement Explorers and to honor her goal to serve as a law enforcement professional.

Suggested edit: Services for Sheryl A. Horak, 17, daughter of Mr. and Mr. Allen Horak, 2907 Cypress Drive, Bettendorf, will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Runge Mortuary. Burial will be in a local cemetery. Visitation in 3 to 9 p.m. Monday.

Sheryl died Saturday of a gun-shot wound. She was a junior at Bettendorf High School.

She was in her second year of the Bettendorf Police Explorers program. She had attained the rank of lieutenant.

Survivors in addition to her parents include sisters, Sandy and Julie Horak, both at home; and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph White, Bettendorf; Mrs. Jeanne Sanchez, Davenport; and Alfred Horak, Okeechobee, Fla.
