November 22, 1924 God lent us an angel; Alice Vivian Behn-Burrus. Born to the late Reverend Frederick H. Behn and the late Beatrice T. Wilson-Behn in Henryetta, Oklahoma, where she received her formal education in a two-room school built and donated to the community by her father.
Alice grew up in a God fearing Christian home and accepted Jesus Christ into her heart at an early age. During WWII she moved to Richmond, California, securing employment as a welder on military ships "freeing a man to fight" she was later gainfully employed as a postal clerk with the United States Postal Service. In 1949 Alice married her love, Roscoe Burrus Sr., the father of her nine children and five stepchildren.
Being no stranger to hard work, Alice spent many long hours working in the fields alongside her husband and kids, her husband and his brothers owned and operated cafes and juke joints throughout the early years of their marriage when she would cook, clean and serve meals. She worked as a house maid, cooking, cleaning, and caring for other families. She was a licensed cosmetologist, pressing and curling hair for the community and was certified and employed as a nurse's assistant.
However what she did best in life and is most proud of was her God-given ability to "Love," she had the patience of Job; and the faith of a saint. Her spirit was sweet, kind, gentle, caring and forgiving; incapable of staying mad, holding a grudge or seeking revenge. It is that very spirit that she would want to be remembered, honored and cherished for.
It was that faith that gave her the courage and endurance she needed to face another day. It was that love that gave her the strength to climb the rough side of the mountain and to walk through the deep, dark valleys. It was that sweet, kind, gentle and trusting spirit that gave her the fortitude to run the race put before her. Never did she complain, she ran her race, she fought a good fight, she finished her course and she kept the faith; and now she will receive her crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge shall give her.
Alice had a date with the Lord and on May 3, 2011 she answered His sweet call. Leaving to cherish her memories are her seven children; Roscoe Burrus Jr., Evelyn Burrus-Montgomery, Yvonne S. Burrus, Michelle Burrus-Hilliard and Michael Burrus, all of San Diego, California, Richel D. Burrus of Converse, Texas, Linda Burrus-Willis of Fresno, California, three stepchildren, Rev. Autry G. Burrus, Devon Burrus and Delon Burrus; her brother Frederick H. Behn, Jr., all of Oklahoma; 57 grandchildren; 102 great-grandchildren; 32 great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Roscoe Burrus, Sr., her son Rev. Aubrey L. Burrus, Sr., her daughter Brenda A. Burrus-Hooper; two stepchildren, Yvonne Burrus-Williams and Edward L. Burrus; three siblings, Hartle Mae Bennett, Willie E. Lewis and Harold Behn.
