A BROKEN HEART.

A Veritable Instance of an Oft Misstated Cause of Death.

Mrs. Gus Waldin's Strange and Sudden Death Accounted for by Post Mortem Examination.

The expression "died of a broken heart" is often heard, but is generally accepted in a sentimental sense. 'The sudden death of Mrs. Gus Waldin yesterday, morning furnished an instance where the expression applies with too awful literalness. Her death comes as a stunning blow to her husband, children and friends. She had had no indisposition for years, beyond what was considered indigestion and that was not deemed of a serious nature.

She had been attending to her usual household duties Monday and arose yesterday morning seemingly in her accustomed state of health. She had set about the preparation of breakfast, when her husband, coming down stairs, found her seated with her head between her hands and in great distress. A physician was summoned in haste but his ministrations were of no avail and the woman died in half an hour.

A post mortem examination was made to relieve the anxiety of the family as to the cause of death and a most astonishing discovery was made. The walls of the heart, of the right auricle, were found to be ruptured completely and the blond had escaped into the thoracic cavity. The wonder is that she survived as long after the seizure as she did. Such cases have been reported where there was fatty degeneration of the heart, but there was nothing of the kind in the present instance, the fibrous walls of the organ being seemingly rent
assunder by some tremendous convulsion.

The deceased was formerly Miss. Katherlne Hoberg, who was born in Denmark in 1859 and came to Burlington with her father and mother in 1869. In the year 1883, August 1, she was married in this city to Mr. Gus Waldin, and bore two children, both boys, aged respectively eight and three years. Besides the husband and children she is survived by her mother, Mrs. Netta Hoberg, and two sisters, Miss Ida Hoborg of this city and Mrs. H. M. Simonson of West Burlington.

Her loss will be keenly felt in her home circle and in the society of her friends. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock.
