Brevet Capt./ Lt. A.M. Collins began as a Carpenter and Millwright. He fought in the Sioux Indian wars in Mankato Mn. , and served in the Mankato Citizen Militia, and he was heavily involved in the New Ulm massacre/Dakota Trials of December 1862 Mankato, MN. and was the carpenter in charge of building the scaffold for the largest mass hanging in US history. He served in the Union Army Civil war, with the beginning rank of JR LT. He was stationed at and was responsible for fortifying the Garrison in Chattanooga Tn. in 1863 and was mustered out at wars end.He continued in public service and criminal justice, and was a Justice of the Peace and Grand Jury member, and also Mayor for the 1883/4 term in Hillsboro, Oregon. He, along with his brother-in-law , Capt/Judge Rodolph Crandall, beautified the early streets of Hillsboro by planting trees along the main thoroughfare. He was a Mason and was buried under the auspices of the IOOF. He is buried with his wife, his parents, and his daughter and son in law in the pioneer section.
