Peacetime Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the US Navy at Massachusetts and served as an Ordinary Seaman. His citation reads "Serving on board the USS Plymouth at the Navy Yard, New York, 26 July 1876, Kersey displayed bravery and presence of mind in rescuing from drowning one of the crew of that vessel." He died at the US Naval Hospital, Chelsea, MA and was orginally buried at the Naval Hospital Cemetery. He was reinterred to Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett, MA between 1905 and 1983. Woodlawn has no burial record for him, but the Congressional Medal of Honor Society has a letter attesting to his reburial there. (bio by: Don Morfe)
