Bright Child's Death Brings Untold Grief
On account of the many inquiries concerning the death of the little daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Steger, of Sharon, Pa., we print the following which appeared in the Sharon Daily Telegraph at that time, and which we have only recently been able to obtain. The article follows:
A cloud of sorrow envelopes the home of Chief of Police Charles B. Steger today with the death of little Ellen Burdell, 5-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steger, who succumbed shortly before midnight Thursday to an acute attack of diptheria. At the police department a solemn quiet prevails for only last Friday the corridors rang with the laughter of the child whose delight it was to spend a few hours with her "daddy" in his office. The neighborhood in Ellsworth St., where she was born and reared is also a scene of deep sorrow, for the little girl was greatly loved and her childish prattle was the source of joy to all who knew her. Little Ellen first became ill last Monday, but it was not until yesterday that her condition was regarded as serious. Late last evening all hope was abandoned. News of her death came as a distinct shock for few people knew she was ill, nor did her parents realize the seriousness of her condition. Ellen Burdell was born in Sharon, April 26, 1919. She was an only child. Since she was a year old she has displayed intelligence equalled by few children of her age. When she was aged 3 she knew her A. B. C.'s and under the guidance of her father, who was a former school teacher, she could readily pick out many letters in the alphabet in a newspaper. Last Friday Ellen spent the afternoon with her daddy in his office. Everyone in the police department and city building looked forward to her visits and they derived much pleasure putting her through a series of simple questions in reading, writing and arithmetic. In the police department her favorites were Sam Landsdowne, Bert Rankin, Alfred Barnes and Dick Vasconi. Mayor Gilbert, no matter how busy, always found time for "conferences" with Ellen when her father brought her to his office.
