Sylvanus William Godon
Birth: Jun. 18, 1809
Death: May 17, 1879

Civil War Union Naval Officer. He entered the United States Naval service as a ten year old midshipman in 1819, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant in 1836, serving under Commodore Isaac Hull in the Mediterranean Squadron from 1839 to 1841. During the Mexican War, he was with the Naval forces which successfully landed Winfield Scott's Army at Vera Cruz. In 1861, just before the Civil War, he was promoted to Captain. During Samuel DuPont's successful Naval assault on Port Royal, South Carolina, he commanded the Union warship USS Mohican. Promoted to Commodore in 1863, he commanded the Fourth Naval Division that participated in the naval siege and capture of Fort Fisher, North Carolina (which was the last Confederate stronghold on the East Coast) in January 1865. He was promoted to Rear-Admiral, US Navy on July 25, 1866. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
