~ IN LOVING MEMORY OF DOC HAL ~
Harold Brewer, known affectionately as "Dr. Hal" a family physician who delivered over 5,000 babies in a career spanning nearly four decades passed away Monday after a battle with cancer. He was 85 years old.
Dr. Hal died about 3 p.m. at his Plant City home, surrounded by the family he loved so much and in the small town he loved so very much. He hung up his stethoscope in 1995, but kept on giving back through public service. Dr. Hal was active in organizations that ranged from First United Methodist Church of Plant City to the Boy Scouts to Plant City Entertainment community theater.
Dr. Hal has left a legacy that touched thousands beyond his medical practice. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, and great-grandfather,
He endeared himself to generations with his humor, grace and charm. His accolades included the Plant City Photo Archives and History Center's Heritage Award and the Plant City Outstanding Citizen of the Year.
Dr. Hal grew up in Mississippi, served in World War II and received his medical degree from the University of Mississippi in the late 1950s. Dr. Hal did his residency at Tampa General Hospital and started practicing in Plant City in 1960.
He was predeceased by his parents, William D. and Viola Brewer; and his brother, William H. Brewer.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lynn; his daughter, Cindy Gutowski (Gregg); his sons, Rodney (Karen), Les (Saira Khan) and Daniel (Robert Wilson); grandchildren, Derik Gutowski (Michelle), Scott Gutowski, Kent Gutowski, Ryan Brewer (Deanna), Nicholas Brewer (Amanda); great grandchildren, Madison Brewer, Brooklyn Brewer, Tenley Brewer, and Annabelle Gutowski.
He attended Pharmacy School at Ole Miss and Medical School at University of Mississippi. Dr. Brewer was involved in many civic and community organizations including Kiwanis Club, Plant City Entertainment, Plant City Chamber of Commerce, South Florida Baptist Hospital Foundation (Diamonds and Denim), Toastmasters - Charter Member, Hillsborough County Medical Association, Plant City Photo Archives, University of Mississippi Family Practice Faculty, Relay for Life, Plant City High School Team Doctor, Boy Scouts of America, East Hillsborough Mental Health Association, The Spring, Elks Club, First United Methodist Church, Friends of the Library (Mystery Dinner Theater), Plant City Arts Council, and United Food Bank.
Dr. Hal received several awards in his lifetime, including Plant City Citizen of the Year 1970, Plant City Photo Archives Heritage Award 2010, and Boy Scouts of America Distinquished Citizen Honoree 2011. The family would like to acknowledge the excellent care given by SFBH and Lifepath Hospice.
