COLUMBIA - Services for Emory P. Austin, Jr., 81, will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, January 24, 2013 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Austin passed away Saturday, January 19, 2013. Born in Greenwood, SC, he was a son of the late Emory P. and Thelma Jones Austin. He graduated from Greenwood High School in 1948 and attended Furman University in Greenville on a football scholarship. He was selected as a member of the 1948 Shrine Bowl team. His education was interrupted in 1950 by the out-break of the Korean War, during which he served three years in the US Air Force, of which two years were served in Japan. Upon his return to the US, he completed his education at the University of South Carolina and remained a dedicated Gamecock fan.
Mr. Austin began his career with SC Highway Department in 1954 as an hourly employee in the Motor Vehicle Division. He became Motor Vehicle Division Director in 1968 and also served as principle liaison with the SC General Assembly. He was regional and national president of the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). He was also a member of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Laws and Ordinances and was a charter member of the Department's highway safety committee. He retired on June 30, 1986 after 34 years of public service and received the "Order of the Palmetto", the state's highest honor. The motor vehicle division building on Shop Road was dedicated in honor of his service to the state. He continued to enjoy athletics in his retirement and was an avid golfer.
Surviving are his sons, Mike Austin (LeAnn) of Columbia, Mitch Austin (Kellie) of Lexington; grandchildren, Megan, Julia and Olivia Austin of Columbia, Jennifer and William Austin of Lexington; brothers, William F. Austin of Columbia, J. Patrick Austin (Carol) of Pawley's Island; sister-in-law, Vivian M. Austin of Columbia; and a number of nieces and nephews.
