Author. A writer of children's literature, she was the recipient of the Newbery Medal for her penning of "The Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" (1967). Born Elaine Lobl, she was raised in Ohio and later in Farrell, Pennsylvania where she graduated from high school. She developed an interest in Chemistry while attending Carnegie Mellon University and after graduation, she married and taught Science at a private school for girls, while raising her family. Inspired by actual people and events in her life, she conceived the idea to create stories based on this and in 1957, she published her first work "Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley and Me, Elizabeth", for which she received a Newbery Medal Nomination. She totaled more than 20 novels during the course of her career.
