Elizabeth Charlotta (called Charlotte) was the daughter of Phineas & Sarah Fairchild. George and Martha Washington that winter (1779-1780) made their home with Phineas & Sarah Fairchild. Mr. Fairchild, a prominent businessman in that community, hauled wood with a team of 6 horses for the army.
(Elizabeth) Charlotta Fairchild, a daughter, looked after the cooking much of the time for General Washington. It was at this time that she met Loammi Casterline, whom she married on Sept. 24, 1786.
They were the parents of 11 children, all born in New Jersey:
Phineas Casterline (May 16, 1788/May 5, 1854) married Eleanore Molly Havens;
Abraham Casterline about 1789;
Nancy Casterline about 1791;
Timothy Casterline about 1792, he married Jane Havens; Polly Casterline about 1793;
Keturah (Cuturah) Casterline (April 2, 1797 – Nov. 3, 1842) She married William Miles;
Elizabeth (Betsy) Casterline about 1798, she married Richard Vernon;
Mahitable (Hetti) Casterline (about 1800 – July 17, 1848) she married Lewis Carver;
Ira Casterline (June 29, 1805 – Nov. 15, 1889) he married Malinda Saxon;
John Casterline (Feb. 25, 1808 – Mar. 17, 1899) he married Eliza Wixsom;
Sally Casterline (about 1817 – Oct. 3, 1849) she married Peter Benedict.
At the end of the war most of the Casterline family moved to Steuben County, New York, or points farther west. After Loammi's death in 1835, in Steuben County, New York Charlotta moved to Indiana to spend the rest of her days with her children.
No one knows for sure where she is buried, but probably in the Baptist Church Cemetery in Hartford, Indiana, northeast corner.
