On 27 June 1966, PFC Frederick Marlton Binder was serving with 161st Assault Helicopter Company, 52nd Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade in Phu Yen Province in South Vietnam.

On that day, PFC Binder was killed when the helicopter he was on had a mid-air collision with another UH-1B helicopter. Both aircraft crashed and burned, killing all eight men aboard the aircraft. His status changed from Missing to Died While Missing. His body was recovered. While in MIA status, Binder received a posthumous promotion to Corporal.
