Hazel M. Shubin

Aug. 8, 1922 - Dec. 8, 2004

Hazel M. Shubin crossed over into the spirit world while in her sleep the evening of Dec. 8, 2004. Born of Russian heritage to Mike and Kate Moiseff in Los Angeles on Aug. 8, 1922, she settled along with her parents on their small family farm located within Travis Air Force Base's current boundary. Forced by eminent domain, her family and their home were moved to Tolenas, California. Hazel attended Union Grammar School in Scandia located along the Rio Vista Highway. For a couple of years Hazel was the only girl in the entire school so she helped to round out their football team. Hazel attended Armijo High School in Fairfield and was picked by the principal at that time to work in the school office.

Hazel worked for the Bank of America for 14 years as secretary to the manager in Vacaville. She left the bank to tend the books of her husband, Steve's farming operation. While living on the family ranch just south of Elmira, Hazel became a Post Noble Grand of the Rebekah's Lodge in Vacaville. She was also an active member of the Elmira Fire Sirens. She kept active within her community when she wasn't birthing lambs or driving tractor.

Hazel's last term of employment was with the Vacaville Museum. During her service with the museum, she was awarded a plaque by the Vacaville Heritage Council and the Vacaville Museum that read: "In Recognition Of A Lifetime Of Loving Service To Solano County. A Legend In Her Own Time."

Hazel moved to Redway, California, in the year 2002 to live with her daughter, Susan Brooks. While in Humboldt County, Hazel made many friends and attended the Healy Senior Center for lunch as often as she could. She also passed along a few pickling secrets to her daughter as Hazel was known for her pickles.

Hazel was an astounding mother full of unconditional love. She was always quick to drive a pot of borsht to an ailing neighbor thus earning the nickname "Angel on Wheels" to her family. She was also a stout supporter of The Arts.

She is predeceased by her parents; her husband, Steve Shubin; her son, James Shubin; her sister, Mary Moiseff; brothers, Nicholas, William and Andrew Moiseff.

Hazel is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Susan and George Brooks of Redway; brothers, John Moiseff of Fortuna and Mike Moiseff of Daly City.

Hazel's cremains will be inurned along side her husband Steve in the Vacaville-Elmira Cemetery as their hearts were joined long ago. Inurnment will be private.

Hazel lived her life
full of grace,
And now she is gone
to take her place,
Among the spirits who
welcome her smiling face.

Hazel's family wishes to thank Heavenly Streams of Rio Dell and Hospice of Humboldt for supporting Hazel with her peaceful crossing.

In lieu of flowers, Hazel's family requests a contribution to your favorite hospice.

Hazel was my mother-in-law for approx. 3 years. How I looked forward to her visits. I always wanted to treat her like a Queen. She was a dedicated mother. I couln't have asked for a better relative.
She can now have peace and do her angel work........

Hazel was always such a generous and happy person.
When we would take our dad, her brother Mike to visit. She would always feed us and package some for us to take home.
We will miss her.

Not only was Hazel one of the sweetest women I've ever known, she was strong and loving of everyone. I never heard a harsh word from her in over 25 years, a record in our world. I doubt she's resting in peace though, she's probably happily making heavenly pickles for all the family and friends already on the other side!
