Thomas George Bernatavitz (Tom),
a 50 year and current resident of Sayre, PA, passed away at the age of 75 on September 24, 9:15pm in Nashville, TN from natural causes.
Tom was born on July 1, 1935 in Dushore, PA of Francis and Agnes (Waldron) Bernatavitz. Tom's sister, Sarah (Sally) Chelap, is a resident of Camp Hill, PA. Throughout Tom's teenage years, Tom was an avid basketball player, and he worked at the Acme Supermarket in Dushore beginning at the age of 13 . Tom graduated from Saint Basil's High School in Dushore, PA in 1954. He enlisted as a private in the United States Army after graduation and served for three years in Orleans, France during the Korean Conflict. While in Europe, Tom organized a reunion with Saint Basil alumni in Garmisch, Germany. Upon returning to the United States, Tom attended college at Mansfield University on a GI Bill. Tom worked as a lifeguard at Worlds End State Park where he met his wife, Romana (Viccaro) Bernatavitz. Tom has been married to his loving and dedicated wife, Romana, for 51 years. They were married on April 4, 1959 at Epiphany Roman Catholic Church in Sayre. He used his education and his training in the service to begin a lifelong career as a dental technician. Tom owned and operated the Valley Dental Laboratory for over fifty years. Tom served and developed many friendships with dentists throughout the Valley and the Twin Tiers.
Tom has been a member of the Epiphany Church for 50 years where he has served as a member of the Knights of Columbus. Tom has also been a member of the Brother and Protective Order of Elks, Ukranian Catholic War Veterans, VFW, American Legion, Notre Dame and Lifetimers Clubs. Tom enjoyed playing cards and playing golf. He also enjoyed watching children and grandchildren playing sports. Tom brought his entire family together twice a year to celebrate the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving. He traveled often throughout the world to visit family and to offer his support to grandchildren.
Besides his wife, Romana, and his sister Sally, Tom is survived by his seven children: Thomas (Linda) of North Wales, PA; Robert (Nancy Duffy) of South Windsor, CT; David (Chris) of Orlando, FL; Mary Lisa (Eric Geppert) of Cleveland Heights , OH; Lori (Joseph Bulkley) of Elmira, NY; John Paul (Jan Price) of Nashville, TN and Michael (Amy) of Chemung, NY. Tom is also survived by eighteen grandchildren: Rachael, Megan, Thomas, David John, Chelsea, Karen, Christian, Geoffrey, Katherine, Elizabeth, Robert, Ariana, John Thomas, John Michael, Luke, Anna, Ian and Joey.
There will be a visitation from 8:30-10:00am at Epiphany Church on Friday October 1, 2010 in Sayre. Following the visitation a funeral service will be conducted by the Reverend Vincent Langan at Epiphany Church in Sayre. A Christian burial will take place at 1:00pm at Saint Basil's Cemetery in Dushore with full military honors being accorded. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in honor of Tom to The Epiphany School 627 Stevenson St Sayre, PA 18840 or to Notre Dame High School 1400 Maple Ave., Elmira NY 14904
Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Blauvelt Funeral Home 625 Broad St., Waverly, NY.
