Joseph M. Carpenter, 84, of Sonestown, died Saturday, July 29, 2006, at Muncy Valley Hospital. Born March 14, 1922, in Laporte, he was the son of the late Persel L. and Ethelyn Ione (Mason) Carpenter. He married Ruth A. Botsford on March 21, 1959.
Joe was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1946 as a gunner on a PV-1 Ventura plane. Upon his discharge, he worked as a truck driver for Yeagle Brothers, Muncy, Arco Auto Carriers, Wisconsin, as an independent driver and he finished his career with Branch Motor Freight of Milton. A lifelong resident of Sullivan County, he was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking and upon retirement, golfing. He was a member of American Legion Post 601, Sonestown and the Fort Rickett's Post 8317, Benton VFW.
Joe is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ruth of Sonestown; sons, Joseph E. (Patricia) Ashburn, Va., Robert P.(Alice), Muncy Valley, and Scott M. (Kellie), Laporte; and daughters, Christine D. (James) Carpenter-Percey, Jonestown, and Lorraine L. (Andrew) Carpenter-Kosinski, Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Also surviving are a brother, Robert P., and a sister, Caroline Bigelow, both of Laporte; a granddaughter, Kirsted E., Ashburn, Va.; and grandsons, Dane, Samuel and Benjamin, also of Laporte.
A memorial service will be held at the Assembly of God Church in Muncy Valley on Saturday, August 12, at 2 p.m. In keeping with Joe's wishes, interment will be at Cherry Grove Cemetery in a private, graveside service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Sullivan County High School Shooting Sports Club, c/o Greg Miller, Sullivan County High School, P.O. Box 98, Laporte, PA 18626.
