Rear Admiral Conway Hillyer Arnold, U.S.N., retired who was President of the Naval Examining and Retiring Boards when he retired November 14, 1910, died yesterday afternoon at his home, 800 Riverside Drive after an illness of seven months. He was 68 years old. Rear Admiral Arnold was a native of this city and was born November 14, 1848, the son of Commander Henry Nathan Tewkesbury Arnold and Cornelia Van Vleck (Sleight) Arnold. He was educated at private schools here and graduated from the Naval Academy in 1867.

In 1870 he married Miss Fannie Wood, daughter of William W.W. Wood, Engineer in Chief, United States Navy. He had been commissioned an Ensign in 1868 and in 1870 he was made Master and Lieutenant the year following. In 1892 he was commissioned Lieutenant Commander and at the outbreak of the Spanish American War he was made Commander. In 1902 he became Captain and six years later Rear Admiral in command of the Third Squadron of the Atlantic Fleet.

He was inspector of merchant vessels here from 1892-1894 when he was ordered to take charge of the Branch Hydrographic Office. He then saw service at sea on board the Massachusetts and was Commander of the Bancroft in 1897. Rear Admiral Arnold was President of the Naval Board on Wireless Telegraphy 1902.

Admiral Arnold was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati, the Aztec Club of 1847, the Army and Navy Club and the New York Yacht Club. He is survived by his wife and two grandchildren. His son, C.H. Arnold Jr., died in 1908 at Denver, Colorado and as he was preparing to leave for Europe in 1910 his daughter-in-law was killed in an accident at Broadway and Sixty-sixth Street. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at St. Ignatius's Church, Eighty-seventh Street and West End Avenue. The interment will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Washington.
