Married Henrietta Hopkins in Portage, Wisconsin on July 4, 1856. To this union was born five girls and two boys. Three girls, Eliza Jane, Genevieve, and Florence, were born in Wisconsin. Mary, Seymour, Clark, and Henrietta were born in Missouri.
Jackson toured the West with his two brothers, Robert and Wolcott, in 1860. He returned to Wisconsin intending to return the next year to the West, but the outbreak of the Civil War made his illegal. Jackson enlisted in the Union forces and served the entire four years of the war. In 1868, in company with his brother Wallace and the Hopkins family, he went to Montana. In 1870, he again returned to Wisconsin, saying that Montana winters were too cold, and that he was going to seek a warmer climate. That summer, together with his family, he moved to Ironton, Missouri, where it is believed he lived the rest of his life.
