Father of City Librarian. Dies at 92. Came to State in 1883.
Levi N. Countryman, civil war veteran, pioneer of Minnesota, and resident of Minneapolis since 1882, business man and one of the oldest residents of the state, died in his ninety-second year today at the home of his daughter, Miss Gracia Countryman, Minneapolis city librarian. Mr. Countryman was born In La Fargeville, N. Y., In 1832, and came west at the age of 16. When he was 18, he married Miss Alta Chamberlain of Nebraska. In 1855, he moved to Minnesota, taking a homestead near Hastings, where he did agricultural work in the summer and taught school In winter.

He finished his college course and took his Master's degree at Hamline university, which was at that time at Red Wing. During the Civil war he joined Company B, Twenty-second Minnesota Volunteer Infantry, and after returning he went Into the agricultural machinery business in Hastings. He later came to Minneapolis where he was connected with the J. I. Case company for 20 years. He also was connected for a number of years with the Buffalo Pitts farm machinery company.

He first came to live in Minneapolis in 1882. During the past 20 years he has spent much of his time in California, living with his daughter, Mrs. L. M. Conger, of Ontario, Calif. Mr. Countryman Is survived by one sister, Mrs. D. B. Truax, of Hastings, who is In her 103d year; two sons. Dr. A. M. Countryman of Cincinnati and T. R. Countryman of Cripple Creek. Colo., and two daughters, Mrs. I M. Conger of Ontario, Calif., and Miss Gracia Countryman of 516 University avenue S.E. Mrs. Countryman died In 1922. Funeral services for Mr. Countryman will be held Monday at 12:46 p.m. at Lakewood chapel.
