|Death: ||Mar. 24, 1864|
Rock Island County
The son of Henry & Judith Key, John was born about 1826 (depending on month of birth, may have been in 1825), in most likely Monroe County, GA.
John moved to Russell Co., Alabama with his father and siblings about 1845, after his mother's death. He married Sabrina Calloway at Russell Co., November 11, 1856. They made their home at Creekstand, Ala (present day Macon Co.) where they began their family and John farmed.
At the age of thirty-five, John traveled to the eastern side of Russell Co. to Ft. Mitchell, Ala, where he enlisted in CO. C, 15th ALA INF REGT, CSA on July 3, 1861.
Known engagements include:
1 - Winchester, Virginia, 1862/05/25 to Cold Harbor, Virginia 1862/06/27, inclusive.
2 - Hazel River, 1862/08/23 through Manassas Junction, 1862/08/27.
3 - Manassas Plains, 1862/08/28, where he was wounded.
(Absent due to wound: Manassas Plains, 1862/08/29 to Fredericksburg 1862/12/13 inclusive.)
4 - Suffolk, 1863/05/03 to Campbell's Station, 1863/11/16 inclusive.
John was hospitalized at Lowden, Tenn. due to sickness, November 25, 1863 (Ironically, his son, and namesake was born this same day) and was accounted for through the 29th. He is believed to have been among those captured by the enemy from the hospital, and among the first POW's sent to Rock Island Barracks. Family lore had it that he died from a disease. Info available today indicate it was probably Smallpox, as there was a huge outbreak at the prison in early 1864.
