Jeremiah (Jere) Harris Cason was the son of Jeremiah Cason (1800-1866) and Elizabeth Faver (1795 – 1867). He married Elizabeth "Bettie" Cooper (1834 – 1901) on July 3, 1856. The couple were married at the hoe of the bride near Fairfield, Bedford County, Tennessee.
Jeremiah Harris Cason was a Baptist minister. He served in the mission field as a minister in Yoruba Country,Africa. While in Africa they lost their first child shortly after birth. Bettie became ill so they returned to the states via London and New York. Shortly after their return they chose to move to Mississippi so that Jere could work as a preacher for several churches. When the Mississippi troops were called up at the start of the Civil War, Jere chose to serve with Company I, Eleventh Mississippi Regiment. Eventually his unit moved north to Virginia. The unit them merged with the Army of Northern Virginia, CSA. He was promoted to the Chaplaincy while serving in Virginia.
Several of the letters that Jere and Bettie wrote to their family while they were in Africa have survived. In addition, several of the letters that Jere wrote to his wife while serving in the CSA have also survived. Copies of the letters have been printed in author Merritt Graves book, Joseph Cason Deceased 1835 and His Descendants pages 70-77.
Jere resigned as Chaplain in February, 1862 only to re-enter the Confederate service in Pickens County, Alabama in March of that same year. While in the 41st Alabama Regiment he was promoted multiple times. He eventually served in the capacity of Captaincy of Company C. After losing an arm while fighting with General Longstreet's troops in East Tennessee. Afterward, he resigned from the army and returned to his life's work--preaching the Word of God.
