|Birth: ||Feb. 5, 1842|
|Death: ||Sep. 26, 1903|
Died: — Near Vancouver, Washington, September 26 1903, Thomas Black, aged 61 years, 7 months and 22 days.
Mr. Black had been a sufferer from Bright's disease for several years and had gradually been growing worse the last year. The latter part of September he wanted to go to Washington, thinking that a change of climate might benefit his health and also want[ed] to see his son whom he had not seen for several years. He stood the trip to Washington very well for one in his condition, but it was not long until he began to grow worse. All that loving hands and medical skill could do was done for him but he rapidly grew worse until a little after midnight September 25th when the Death Angel called him.
He was born in Champaign Co. Illinois, February 5, 1842, living there until 1855 when he moved to Iowa where he lived until his death. In 1861 he enlisted in Troop D of the 1st Iowa Cavalry, serving his country faithfully until the close of the war.
In 1862 while home on a furlough, he was married to Ellen Adams and to this union fourteen children were born, twelve of them are living.
The funeral services were conducted by his son, Hooper Black of Washington. Interment was in the Dawson Cemetery.
