Husband of Sarah Hughes and later Ellen Nichols. He and Sarah adopted a nephew, Bert Marle Salisbury.
JK enlisted at 14, after lying his age, to join the 7th Wisconsin Infantry, Company B, which became part of the famed "Iron Brigade" in the Civil War. He saw battle at Gettysburg and was injured (shot in the hand) at the North Anna River during the Wilderness Campaign.
After the war he went to North Dakota, where he farmed, sold farm equipment, and owned a feed mill. He is 1 of 15 original members of the Minnewaukan chapter of the Grand Army of the Republic(GAR).
His mother was Catherine Barret(1824-1887)
