Mons was from Luster, one of the 26 kommunes in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway (Noreg or Norge). There is a farm (gard or gardsnavn) in Luster named Haganes. Luster was one of the areas where emigration fever from Norway to America was the strongest.

Mons fought on the side of the Union during the Civil War. According to his tombstone, Mills was a member of Company E, 7th Wisconsin Infantry (Civil War).HAGNESS, M. T. WI 7th Inf Co G. Civil War: Private. Post war: Buried at Grand Forks, North Dakota; stone reads "6 Jan 1843 - 28 Dec 1897". Sources: (Wisconsin Cemetery Records) (HEDBERG) On the roster of Company E, he is shown as "MonsThompson".

In the 1870 (June) census (Naples, Buffalo County, Wisconsin), he is shown as a farmer, living with his wife, Susan, and two children - Ida and Peter.

In 1878, he,his wife and family came from Buffalo County, Wisconsin, to northeastern Dakota Territory and settled on a farm near Merrifield, Allendale Township, in Grand Forks County. He and his family appear there in the 1880 Census. The surname was spelled "Hagnes". The family moved a few years later to the town of Grand Forks.

He was a member of Willis A. Gorman post G.A.R. in Grand Forks, North Dakota. There is a statue in Grand Forks honoring those who fought in the Civil War. Mills is listed on the statue.

His home was on Chestnut Street (maybe 024) and at the time of his death he was living on Second Street in East Grand Forks, Minnesota. At the time of his death, Mills carried $2,000 insurance in a Red Wing company. His funeral was at the Methodist Church under the auspices of the G.A.R. There is a big headstone in the cemetery. He is buried in the 1st Addition, Book 198, Lot 3, Grave 5.
