Author, Historian, and County School Superintendent. Hayes was born into a Texas cattle family that migrated to the Arizona Territory in 1891 and obtained grazing rights on the San carlos Apache Indian Reservation near Globe, where he was born in 1901. After finishing his education, he taught school in Globe for 12 years before becoming the Gila County school superintendent, a position he held until his death. He died the day after he finished checking the galley proofs on his final book, the biography of one of the greatest and longest serving sheriffs in American history. As superintendent, he worked tirelessly to integrate the Apache school children into the public school system. Erle Stanley Gardner called Hayes an unusual writer, a skilled historian, and an interesting narrator. He displayed all these talents in writing his popular and true chronicles of the old west: Boots and Bullets - The Life and Times of John W Wentworth, Sheriff Thompson's Day - Turbulence in the Arizona Territory, Apache Vengeance, the true story of the Apache Kid, And Then There were None, the true story of a long buried chapter in Apache history. He knew and was friends with most of the legends that he wrote about; Al Sieber, Sherriffs Glenn Reynolds and Jihn Thompson, Aaron Hackney, and John Wentworth to name only a few. The city of Globe has honored him in many ways and one of the most notable was to name the street that leads to the ancient Indian ruins,Besh ba gowah and Globes biggest attraction, Jess Hayes Road.
