YORKTOWN SOPHOMORE KILLED ON DARK ROAD
Services for Jim Roy Vester, 16-year-old Yorktown High School student killed Tuesday morning, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Daleville Church of Christ.
The high school sophomore was killed instantly as he walked along Jackson Street Pike near his home in the early morning darkness and was struck by a car. Upon impact, Vester's body was hurled some 100 feet, landing in a driveway.
The youth was reportedly walking from his home to another residence to obtain a ride to school when he was struck. Investigators said the youth normally walked alongside the road but heavy rains during the night had created large puddles which the youth was apparently trying to avoid when he was struck from behind. County police officers also reported young Vester was wearing dark clothing and that the pavement was wet and the area particularly dark for 7:10 a.m. in the midst of a heavy rain. Coroner Rodney Qualkinbush said Vester died instantly of neck and head injuries. It was the 31st traffic death of the year in Delaware County. The driver of the car was not cited. After impact, the auto veered out of control off the left side of the road. The auto struck an iron post causing about $750 damage.
Young Vester is survived by his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. David Sharp of Reed Station and his father, James Vester Sr.; two sisters, Susan Kay and Patricia Lynn Vester, at home; three stepbrothers, Douglas, Michael and Mark Sharp, at home; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Chester Ball and Mrs. Sadie Vester of Muncie, and step-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Sharp, Walonut Ridge, Ark.
Burial will be in Elm Ridge Cemetery. Friends may call at Ballard and Shirey Funeral Home in Daleville from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday and at the church one hour before the funeral.
