Texas Ranger. He also had served as a deputy sheriff in Hidalgo County. According to folklore he got his nickname because he had his throat cut during a brawl and he could no longer speak above a whisper. It was actually from a surgery in 1921 in Mexico that removed his voice box that left his voice a whisper.
