College and pro football player. After graduating from Christian Brothers Academy in St. Louis, Robert James Steuber came to the University of Missouri. Switched from an end to halfback in his junior year, he was third in the nation in rushing yardage in 1941 and second in 1942. In his senior year he led the nation in scoring and was named first-team All-American. He is one of only six football players at Missouri to have his number retired. He was at DePauw in 1943 as a Navy V-6 trainee where he again led the nation in scoring with 129 points. He was a first round choice of the Chicago Bears in the 1943 NFL draft. After playing just one game with the Bears in 1943, he entered the Navy Air Corps. He played service football with the Ottumwa Naval Air Base Skyers in 1944. Following World War II, he played in the All-American Football Conference. He played with the Cleveland Browns in 1946, Los Angeles Dons in 1947, and Buffalo Bills in 1948. His football career ended when he suffered a broken back in 1948. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1971. He later became a business man in St. Louis and announcer on St. Louis Cardinals broadcasts in the 1960s.
