"Tobias Polhemus, was born about 1708 and died in Upper Freehold, New Jersey, March 18, 1779, at the age of seventy-one. He is buried in the Old Tennant Churchyard. He was married three times, but the identity and parentage of his first wife have not been established. Tobias and his first wife had four children: John, Nathaniel, Sarah, and Daniel.
On December 29, 1748, at the age of forty he married his second wife, Parthenia Emley (Imlay) who was only twenty-two years of age at the time. She died on February 13, 1750, about a year later. She was a daughter of Samuel and Mary Emley of New Hanover, Burlington County, New Jersey. Tobias and Parthenia had only one child: Joseph.
Three years later, Tobias married again. His third wife, a young girl of sixteen, was Maria Lefferts, the daughter of Leffert and Jannetja (Conover) Lefferts. She died January 3, 1781, at the age of forty-four and is buried in the Old Tennant Churchyard also. Tobias and Maria were the parents of eight children: Hannah, Leffert, Parthenia, Jane, Mary, Tobias, Benjamin, and Arthur. The history of the Old Tennant Church states that Tobias Polhemus from Allentown, New Jersey, was one of the first trustees of the church in 1750. In 1758, his farm in Upper Freehold consisted of 200 acres."
