Elmers dream from early childhood was to become a sailor thus the nickname Skipper. Due to having rheumatic fever at an early age he was left with an enlarged heart keeping him out of the service for many years. He was eventually able to pass the physical and join the army where he served for about 10 years until due to a heart condition he was forced to take a medical discharge.

His firt marriage was at the age of 17 to Aura Walsh in 1960 to this marriage a daughter Sherry Lee was born.

His second marriage was to Claudia Schach and together they had a son Scott Patrick.
