Jon was the son of Vernon Cottrell and Jackaline Hanson. Born in Poteau, Oklahoma the family moved to Modesto, California when Jon was about 3. His biggest memories of the trip were that he had to sit in the back seat with a dishpan full of cooking utinsels between his legs. On this trip he also discovered sucky things for the first time (straws) and that there could be 2 sheets on a bed. He attended Ceres Schools his whole life and graduated from Ceres High in 1967. Shortly thereafter marrying Sandra Huffman together they had 2 children Shane and Shannon. The marriage ended after about 3 years and Jon was awarded custody of his children.
In September of 1971 he hired Susan McClelland to watch his children. On New Years Eve 1971 he worked up enough nerve to ask her to go to a company party with him. Three days later he asked her to marry him and on January 16, 1972 Jon and Susan were married. His last child Jon Jr. was born during this marriage. Jon and Susan were married for 28 years at the time of his death. All 5 of his grandchildren were born before his death Jonathon Cottrell, Shane and Caitlin Cottrell/Johnson, Nick Heaton and Dylan Cottrell.
He was a drywall finisher by trade owning his own company the last few years of his life. He loved to ride dirt bikes (motorcycles) and even competed in a few motocross's in the 1970's. Then it was on to fourwheeling with his beloved Toyota Landcruiser; which also took him and the family on many camping and fishing trips. His passion the last 15 years of his life was blackpowder rifles and the mountainman era which he became involved in when his brother Larry gave him a blackpowder shotgun; from then on blackpowder was all he shot. He was a member of the Sonora Smokepolers where he competed in shooting competitions and marched in the Sonora, California parade. He loved life and lived it to the fullest.
In 1993 with all of their children grown and moved away Jon and Susan moved from California and settled in Jacket, McDonald Co., Missouri. They purchase 22 acres and started raising beef cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys. Jon loved living in the country.
Jon is survived by his wife Susan, mother Jackie, brothers Larry and Chuck, children Shane, Shannon and Jonathan, and 5 grandchildren.
