AMM 3, U.S. Navy, WW II.

(U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs).

BOLAND John H. Boland, son of John James Boland and Edith Welton Boland, moved on to a better fishing hole on Saturday, December 13, 2008. He was 83 years old. Born on March 8, 1925 in Derby, he graduated from Ansonia High School in 1942. Aftr graduation, John enlisted in the U.S Navy and served honorably for the duration of World War II in the Pacific Theater Fleet Air Wing Two. In June of 1945, John married his high school sweetheart, Anna Theresa DiPiro and together they raised their four children, John L. Boland, Kathleen B. Sobolewski, Susan B. Shepherd and Thomas P. Boland. After the war, John achieved a college degree from New Haven College in mechanical engineering, a profession he practiced at Uniroyal Rubber Co., for many years and at Seal Products of Naugatuck until he retired. John was an active and longstanding member of VFW Post 597, serving the last 63 years as post commander and numerous other post officer positions. He was also a former school board chairman in Ansonia. A creative energetic person, John began, and completed, many major projects with friends, among them the former Pennyroyal Lodge in Seymour, and a cabin for his family at Ashmere Lake in hinsdale, Mass. He was always generous with his time and skills to anyone who asked for his help. John had a great sense of humor. It could be said that he invented the concept of being "politically incorrect: for he shied from giving you his point of view; a point always funny and generally poignant. His humor and wit always brought smiles and will be sorely missed. Two sports John liked were cribbage and fishing. He played cribbage regularly with his veteran friends who often grimaced at his manner of gloating in victory. As as avid fisherman, his luck was often better at cards. John's first love was his family. He and Anna were together for 53 years. Anna passed away in 1998. He is survived by four children; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; his sister, Carol Pagliaro and her husband, Peter, his sister, Mary Casalveri; and his brother-in-law, Joseph DiPiro. Much more could and should be said of John. A good father, a hard worker and an honest and loving man. Best of luck on your new fishing trip. His funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Bennett Funeral Home, 91 N. Cliff St., Ansonia, to the Church of the Assumption for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. Burial with full military honors will be in Pine Grove Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. with the VFW service at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Assumption School or Harold Leever regional Cancer Center in care of the funeral home.
