T. Strauss, 21, Killed In Crash
An Ephrata man became the 31st traffic fatality in the county early Saturday morning when the care in which he was a passenger went out of control and was hit by a pickup truck. The victem was identified as Thomas Russell Strauss, 21, of 103 W. Fulton St., Ephrata. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:10 a.m.
The scene of the accident , according to state police, was along Route 897, two miles south of Swartzville in Brecknock Twp. Police said the victem was riding in the car which was driven by his cousin, 22-year-old David Strauss, Denver R1, when the car, which police said was apparently speeding, failed to negotiate a left curve. The car collided with a truck operated by Jacob Wanner, 67, of Stevens R1.
Police said that the victem was thrown from the car when it left the road. An autopsy performed Saturday morning indicated that Strauss suffered a compound skull fracture and died of a resulting loss of blood. At this time last year, a total of 54 persons died on Lancaster County roads.
Strauss was employed as a construction worker by Penncrest Construction Corp., Leola. His widow is the former Bonnie Buch. SHe survives, along with two small daughters at home, Kristin Marie and Amber Michele. Also among his survivors are his parents, Russell A. and Mary Antes Strauss of Rothsville; four brothers and sisters, Daniel P., Debra L., William R., and Janice K., all of Rothsville, maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs Paul B.
