Composer, Teacher of psalmody, Chorister, and Maker of drums and tambourines. Wrote several published books of hymn tunes, and was an itinerant singing master in Fairfield Co, CT in the early 1800's. Had nine children and moved to Ohio in 1829.

First wife, Hannah Dauchy, daughter of Philip and Mary Jones, was born 29 February 1772 and died 11 August 1800. They had two boys.

Second wife, Rachel Travis, he married in 1801 in Washington Co, NY. She died several years later.

Third wife, Abigail Ross
One other son, Stephen Jr, was born about 1823
and three unknown children
