Cpl. Ronald R. Payne Jr. of Lakeland died of injuries sustained in combat in Tawara, Afghanistan, May 7, 2004. He was 23.

Born in Lakeland on Dec. 31, 1980, he was a lifelong resident.

He was a recon scout in the Marines.

Although the details are still few, Cpl. Payne was apparently ambushed while on a reconnaissance mission in Afghanistan with the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Military officials have said despite being mortally wounded, he fought to his last breath.

Cpl. Payne was a 1999 graduate of Mulberry High School. He was a center on Mulberry High's basketball team and played football for his school.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
