Mother Mary Aloysia Hardey, RSCJ, the first American-born Assistant General of the Society of the Sacred Heart, was born in Piscataway, Maryland, to Frederick William Hardey and Sarah Spalding, on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, 8 DEC 1809, and was baptized Mary in thanksgiving to the Mother of God.

In 1816 the Hardey family moved to Louisiana Territory and settled on a plantation in Opelousas. In 1822, Mary Ann was sent to school at the Academy of the Sacred Heart, Grand Coteau, LA. A year after leaving school, Mary Ann returned to Grand Coteau to enter the noviceship of the Society of the Sacred Heart. She took the name Aloysia at her clothing. Mary Aloysia made first vows 15 MAR 1827 and her solemn profession on 19 JUL 1833.

Mother Hardey was appointed the Assistant General of the Society of the Sacred Heart in Oct 1872 and took up residence at the Mother House in Paris.

Mother Hardey was responsible for establishing many houses of the Society of the Sacred Heart, including Manhattanville, Kenwood, Sault-au-Recollet, Eden Hall, Grosse Pointe and Havanna. Mother Hardey was also a trusted confidant and friend of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, the foundress of the Society of the Sacred Heart.

Mother Hardey died at the Motherhouse in Paris in 1886. She was initially buried in Paris, but her remains were transferred to Kenwood, 12 DEC 1900.

Mother Hardey was known for her practicality, her sense of humor and most of all for her great faith and love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Having learned the charism of the Society at Saint Madeleine Sophie's knee, Mother Hardey imbued the spirit of the Society as Mother Barat envisioned it. Mother Hardey was known for her holiness and fidelity to the Rule and at one point made the following statement regarding her religious life: "To secure to the Heart of Jesus the worship of love and adoration, to make known Its divine attractions and to imitate its virtues."

Mother Mary Aloysia Hardey, ora pro nobis!

Requiescat in pace! Cor Jesu, spes mea!

"Cor unum et anima una in Corde Jesu."
