Mother Alice Mary Cushing, RSCJ.

Alice Mary Cushing was born October 19, 1854 in Chicago, Illinois. She was one of five children born to John Cushing and Alice Clancy. Two of the children died at an early age; the other three were Ellen, Alice and Michael. Her parents emigrated from Ireland.

She was educated at the Convent of the Sacred Heart on Taylor Street in Chicago until the age of eighteen. The following year, on September 30, 1873, she entered the Society of the Sacred Heart at Maryville in St. Louis, Missouri. She received the religious habit on December 30, 1873 and pronounced her First Vows on July 21, 1876. She was sent to the Indian Mission at St. Mary's Kansas where she taught English. She remained there for two years and then returned to Maryville.

In 1881 she was sent to Paris to study. She made her Final Vows in Rome on September 2, 1882. She spent many years in charge of the studies in our schools in Omaha, Menlo Park (CA), Chicago and St. Louis, all the while teaching the higher classes.

In September 1924, she arrived at the convent on Jackson Street in San Francisco and was there until the convent moved to 2222 Broadway, where she remained until her death on May 14, 1941. She is buried in the convent cemetery on the grounds of the Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton, CA.
