HAMILTON, NANCY B., 90, died Sunday, April 22, 2007. She was a retired educator, having taught for over 30 years in Jefferson Co., KY, teaching at Okolona High School and retired while teaching at Southern High School. In 1965, she completed her education by receiving her doctorate in chemistry from The Ohio State University. This is notable because she was only the third woman accepted into this program by OSU. She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Moss; and a nephew, Mike LaFavers. Survivors include two sisters, Jane Hutchison (Carl) and Mary Ellen LaFavers; nephews, Bob Moss (Reta) and David Hutchison (Leisa); niece, Mary Jane LaFavers; seven great- nieces and nephews; and two great-great nieces. Graveside services are 3 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday at Columbia Cemetery. Visitation: after 1 p.m. (CDT) Wednesday at Grissom Funeral Home. Memorials to either St. Judes, Kosair Charities or Crusade for Children.

Nancy B. Hamilton, 90, outstanding science educator

She was a woman of remarkable achievements. A member of an old, respected family, Dr. Hamilton had retired to Columbia after a distinguished career as a teacher of chemistry.

Nancy B. Hamilton, 90, 301 E. Guardian ST, Columbia, KY, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at 12:50am, at the Jane Todd Crawford Hospital in Greensburg, KY.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at 3:00pm at Columbia Cemetery with Rev. David Alexander officiating, with burial to follow.

Visitation will be after 1:00pm CT, Wednesday, April 25, at Grissom Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY.

She was a daughter of the late Herman and Mary Myers Barnett.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Moss, and a nephew, Mike LaFavers.

Survivors include the following:
Two Sisters: Jane (Carl) Hutchison, Columbia, KY; and Mary Ellen LaFavers, Somerset, KY

Two nephews and one niece: Bob (Reta) Moss, Mary Jane LaFavers, and David (Leisa) Hutchison

Special caregivers: Terica Derringer and Carol Doyle
She graduated from Columbia High School in 1933 and from Lindsey Wilson Junior College in 1935.

She then became a student at Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College and received her Bachelor of Science degree from there in 1937.

She then began a distinguished teaching career, teaching science and chemistry at a number of Kentucky high schools.

She earned a Masters degree from the University of Kentucky in Science.

In 1965, she completed her education by receiving her Doctorate in Chemistry from Ohio State University. This achievement is all the more notable because she was only the third woman accepted into this program, at the time, at OSU.

After receiving her doctorate, she taught in the Jefferson County School System for over 30 years.

Lindsey Wilson College honor her at Homecoming 1998 with the Distinguished Alumna Award.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Judes Hospital, Kosair Children's Hospital, or the Crusade for Children.

Grissom Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
